Case Study – Casa de Paz

World Child Project brings together volunteers that are leaders in the worlds of art, business, education, medicine and science, and give them opportunities to contribute directly; by simply doing what they are good at and what they are most passionate about.

WCP identifies orphanage directors who have already developed effective programs but lack the financial and human capital resources to build on their successes. We then invest time and money to develop integrated education, health and direct care programs that are both effective and sustainable.

WCP endeavors to create effective and replicable models that, when proven successful, will be adopted by other orphanages. Our goal is to not only assist local leaders in providing a better life for the children they care for, but also to free up their time to work with other orphanages facing similar concerns.

WCP helps local leaders document the effectiveness of their programs so they can attract “institutional capital” from local governments or larger international organizations to further expand their programs after we are gone.

WCP understands that child poverty is a complex problem that no one single intervention can adequately and permanently address. Instead, we attack the problem from a “systems” perspective by focusing on projects that have more than one positive outcome for orphaned and abandoned children and their communities. In this way, WCP develops programs that confront the current infrastructural obstacles that perpetuate child poverty.

WCP met Jonatán López Sánchez , director of Casa de Paz Orphanage, a little over a year ago. We decided to work with him for several reasons. First, he had successfully negotiated with the government to obtain funding for the severely disabled children he was caring for, which was the first time a large institution in Baja Mexico provided funds for a specific population - a significant act because it opens the door to more and more direct funding by the local government. Additionally, he leveraged his commercial banking background in an effort to create bank accounts for children in his care. In Mexico, orphans cannot open savings accounts because they cannot obtain a parent’s signature and Jonatán understood the independence and opportunity a young adult could enjoy with some savings. He even used the farm on his property to produce revenue for the kids to put money in their accounts. Finally, WCP understood that by freeing the time he spent raising money to support his orphanage, he could fight other battles for his children and help guide orphanages facing similar issues.

We decided that the most effective way to provide initial support to Jonatán was to develop greenhouses on his property because: (1) they provide an immediate “earned income” revenue stream that would make them less dependent on outside resources, (2) they provide a meaningful work experience and training for young adults living at the orphanage, and (3) they continue to produce such effects long after our investment had paid off.

Leaders of WCP identified this innovative local leader, came up with a plan to provide him with the most effective and sustainable form of assistance, worked with him to forecast the costs, outputs, crop rotations, etc associated with the project, and then raised the funds necessary to build the greenhouses. WCP even went down to Guadalupe Valley to hand deliver the check and throw the entire orphanage a party to celebrate.
